Spring is here! When you’re doing spring cleaning, don’t forget to take a look at your garage as well. No, not so you have somewhere to put all the clutter away, but to clean it as well. And while you’re at it, think about getting your garage door a tune-up.
Spring-Cleaning in the South
Here in Houston, we may have skipped the spring and gone straight to summer already. However, just because we jumped a season doesn’t mean that annual cleaning still can’t happen. Yes, we know — spring cleaning is no fun, it seems to take forever, and there’s a million things you’d rather do. However, even if you’re avoiding cleaning the house, it’s a good idea to take a look at your garage.
Spring cleaning started because in the winter, many people close up their houses tightly and blast the heat all winter. As a result, when spring came, the house would often be a bit musty or even smell slightly stale, due to a lack of fresh air. Therefore, the idea was that once spring came, the windows could be thrown open again and everything could be aired out. In milder climates, like Texas, this doesn’t exactly apply, but it’s still a good idea to clean with the advent of the season.
How does this apply to your garage, though?
Some people might feel inclined to take all the junk they accumulated over the winter, and stick it in their garage. Don’t do it! While you may not need to air out your garage, it’s a good idea to take a look at it after winter. Is it a messy space, and if so, can you clean it up? If you have a fridge in your garage, clean it out! Make sure there’s nothing expired in there — because the smell will get everywhere. Finally, take a look at the mechanics, like your garage door.
Winter for Houston tends to mean more rain than anything else, so make sure your door hasn’t suffered any water damage. Open and close it a few times, just to observe the movement and listen for any strange noises. Even if it checks out, getting a spring tune-up for your garage door is always a good idea.
Spring-cleaning doesn’t have to be a hassle. Getting your house and garage in order can be very satisfactory, and when it’s done, you won’t have to think about it again for another year.
