Why Doesn’t My Garage Door Stay Closed?

Table of Contents

Has this ever happened to you? You are driving off to work and happen to glance in the rearview mirror and see your garage door standing open when you know you closed it. You press the remote on your phone and watch as it closes, only to hit the ground and pop back open again.

The Garage Door Limiter

The problem could be with your garage door limit settings. The limit adjustment control instructs the garage door opener when the door closes. In this case, the down limit probably needs adjustment. When the limiter is set too far, and the door gets to the ground, it thinks it has hit an obstruction because it has not reached the point where it is supposed to be when closed. So, for safety reasons, it will pop back up just as if there were a child or vehicle in its path.

Adjusting the Limiter

Depending on the brand of your garage door opener, the adjustment is a do-it-yourself (DIY) project if you have the time and a screwdriver. You might need a step ladder too. If you do not have an owner’s manual for your garage door, search online, download the manual for your brand and model and save it. Then check for the location of the limit adjustment screws.

The adjustment screws are usually on the motor housing of the opener, either on the side, back or bottom. You will likely see two plastic screws. Turn the screw for the down limit one full turn in the minus direction. Try the door; if it does the same, turn it another full turn. Keep trying until it stays closed. If after four turns it won’t stay closed, call a garage door repair technician. The switch may be broke, or your sensors could be out of alignment.

If you cannot get it right, or you do not have time, call the professionals at a Houston area Garage Door Doctor.
