As the weather gets warmer, it seems like all the animals are coming back out! There are squirrels everywhere, but there are also rats, mice, raccoons, and opossums. Unfortunately, the latter ones aren’t so obvious, because it’s quite likely they’re in your house.
That is, they’re in the attic and rooting around up there, but what does that have to do with your garage? If your garage is connected in any way to your house, whether it’s connected through a door or an overhead breezeway, these pests are having just as much fun in your garage as they are in your house. If the garage acts as a “man cave,” or just a storage unit, it’s definitely time to rethink your options.
The best thing to do, of course, is to call some form of pest control to verify that there’s actually an animal running wild, but after you’ve done that, there are some garage-specific options. For one, make sure the entrance door is in good shape and can close firmly. If you can trap the animal in there, that’s even better! Secondly, if your garage doubles as a “man cave,” take all the food out of it. It’s likely that leaving that bag of chips out just encourages the mice and rats to come and nibble. If you use it as a storage option, go through and make sure every box is tightly sealed, and if you’re not sure, bring it into the house.
Pest control is something that affects the entire property, not just the house. It’s also a good idea to periodically organize and clean your garage when you can, because even if you may not think there could be animal damage, you don’t want to discover it when you need that very important document. Make garage maintenance a priority.
